Provision of weather data for the interested public in Slovenia

Overview: Meteolab Web Service

The main objective of Meteolab web service is to provide the data from the IlirskaBistrica-Trnovo to the public in a usable form. Trnovo is a settlement in the city of IlirskaBistrica in southwestern Slovenia. The web service enables interested members of the public to track detailed current and historical weather data and access local or national forecasts. Since the station IlirskaBistrica-Trnovo continues to grow, new and innovative sensors are constantly being added to achieve better and more accurate measurements.

Special challenges

1. Measurement of large amounts of precipitation

The field of precipitation measurement is very complex and dynamic. In addition, Slovenia experiences large amounts of precipitation every year, which requires highly accurate measurement. In the past, it was extremely difficult to measure cloudbursts, heavy daily precipitation, and precipitation accompanied by strong winds.

2. Detection of extremely light precipitation

The old Lambrecht rain gauge 1518 H3 was well suited for recording large amounts of precipitation. However, this rain gauge was not designed to record extremely light precipitation. The Ilirska Bistrica-Trnovo station needed a more sensitive measuring device to improve accuracy and data quality.

Requirement

Precipitation intensity (the amount of precipitation expressed in millimeters per unit of time) varies enormously in the Ilirska Bistrica area. A rain gauge was needed that could measure all precipitation intensities, from light drizzle to heavy rain, with high accuracy.

Solution

Meteolab has introduced the heated rain[e]H3 precipitation sensor. Now, precipitation data can be processed together with other data from the automatic weather station and made available to the public on the Meteolab website.
