Project INBW - Wasserauto

Optimizing irrigation for agriculture

Solutions for climate change and increasing water demands

Growers around the world need to use water and energy more efficiently than ever to protect their harvests and the viability of their businesses. That means getting irrigation right is crucial, especially in the face of increasing water regulations and growing frost. While automated irrigation systems are already standard in many greenhouses, open field irrigation is still often done manually based on experience or intuition, which can lead to over- or under-watering.

While many farmers have weather stations and moisture sensors that could improve the precision of their irrigation operations, the data from those devices is often fragmented or difficult to access. That’s why LAMBRECHT partnered with Ostfalia University’s Project INBW -- to improve irrigation and general weather-readiness for the world’s growers.

About Ostfalia and the INBW

The Ostfalia University is one of the largest universities of applied sciences in Lower Saxony, with over 10,000 students. More than 90 practice-oriented degree programs are offered at four locations. The research project of INBW aims to develop solutions for the challenges faced by agriculture in the context of climate change. The overall goal of the project was to develop an intelligent service platform that links data from various sources and providers to enable demand-based and (partially) automated irrigation. To achieve that end state, the INBW team needed a reliable weather station that would...

  1. Provide precise and reliable climate data for a variety of parameters
  2. Enable real-time data transmission
  3. Integrate with their other technology
  4. Be easy to install and maintain

A comprehensive solution

The Weather Backpack is the perfect weather station for the “WasserAuto” project, as it captures seven meteorological parameters and provides precise research-quality data. It is easily transportable, allowing for efficient monitoring of large areas, and meets all project requirements: reliable climate data, real-time data transmission, and seamless integration into existing systems. It is also robust, weatherproof, and easy to install.
